Abstract
The CO2 efflux was measured on the forest floor of a secondary broad-leaved forest located in southern Kyoto prefecture using an automated IRGA enclosed chamber. T11e location at which the measurements were made had been bare land for many centuries until reforestation took place two hundred years ago. Toda, the soil organic carbon ratio is very low and the soil structure not well developed. No clear diurnal fluctuation in CO2 efflux was recognized, presumably due to the very low organic carbon ratio in the soil and the limited emission of CO2 from surface layers. The largest seasonal fluctuations in CO2 efflux rate did not occur on those days when soil temperatures were highest, as the soil moisture was also low at this lime.
